Objectives

Raising awareness to the characteristics, problems and specific interventions of coastal areas as systems of very dynamic interface and polarizer of occupations, uses and transformations. Environmental problems. Introduction to planning methodologies. Introduction to the typologies of coastal defence intervention.
Analysis of case studies.

Coastal environment. Demographic attraction by the coast. Use, occupations and interventions. Use conflicts.
Physiographic agents: wind, tides, maritime agitation, currents.
Interaction between agents and solid borders.
Morphologic evolution of beaches, dunes and estuaries. Coastline general regression.
Cause of erosion. Vulnerability and risk. Planning figures.
Coastal management strategies. Protection. Models of expansion of coastal areas.
Reduction of specific anthropic actions. Coastline “maintenance”. Coastal defence. Functioning. Design, Construction. Impact minimization. Mixed solutions. Monitoring. Case studies.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Presentation of course unit themes by giving a great variety of practical examples both national and international. Presentation of specific concepts and terminology. The importance of coastal zones planning, the reduction of anthropic factors and requalification and coastal defence.
