Objectives

Justification
In this curriculum unit (UC) students demonstrate their ability to develop autonomously a research, innovation and development work on a theme of materials engineering. This is, in most cases, the last course before graduation. In this course is evaluated the depth of knowledge acquired by students, its ability to integrate knowledge and the proficiency with which they are employed to solve engineering problems.

Objectives
The aim of the Dissertation is to prepare students for the job market. With this curriculum unit is evaluate the student's ability to use their knowledge in science and technology of materials in design solutions for problems. In this curriculum unit the student develop scientific expertise in specific areas of the course but also develop several soft skills such as the ability to plan, analyze and summarize, the successful management of time, teamwork and communication techniques.
There are two versions of this curriculum unit: in academic or academic and industrial environment. This last option is intended for the training of Engineers for companies, which will have capacity to concept, develop, design, implement, and operate systems in the enterprise and in the social context. The choice of academic environment is aimed at the development of the similar competences but is associated with a greater deepening scientific.
Most of the Dissertations of MIEMM have a part of the work developed in industrial environment so preparing the student to operate under a new environment.

Skills and Learning Outcomes
With this curriculum unit the students:
- demonstrate ability to plan, execute and submit an individual work.
-deepen expertise in specific area.
-develop the spirit of scientific criticism.
-assimilate processes, practices and methodologies associated with scientific research.
-develop techniques of written, electronics/multimedia and oral communication.
-demonstrate ability to managing time effectively.

Program

There is not a program for this course. Each student develops a theme under the supervision of a faculty member and may exist also a supervisor of another participating institution.
The Dissertation of MIEMM can be developed in Academic Environment and/or business environment. The work can take place in national institution or abroad.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The dissertation work is an individual work in which the student develop the components of research, innovation and/or development. The work can be held in academic or academic and business environment. In the latter case the objectives, nature and form of monitoring of the work shall be subject to agreement between the student and the supervisors (see contract model in UC's Contents). The protection of any confidentiality issues by the company/institution for a period of three years can be assured. The thesis is written according to defined rules (see the Thesis MIEMM-UC content instruction).

Eligibility for exams

The Dissertation on MIEMM runs on an exclusive basis being its frequency incompatible with the inscription in other courses. The frequency is obtained with the approval of the dissertation.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final grade is assigned by a jury, proposed by Scientific Commission of MIEMM and appointed by the Director of FEUP, which evaluates the written version of the Dissertation and the presentation of the work performed by the student. The jury is composed of a member of the Scientific Commission of MIEMM, one supervisor, a professor or PhD researcher outside the FEUP and, eventually, another expert in the field of dissertation.
The discussion of the work has a maximum duration of 55 minutes being 10 minutes reserved for the presentation of the work and the other for the discussion with the jury.
The final grade of the dissertation uses the numeric scale 0 to 20 and is calculated by the arithmetic mean of the grades, rounded to units, assigned by the members of the jury. (see Mestrados-classificações in Contents of the UC). This rating is assigned considering the evaluation criteria proposed by the Scientific Council of FEUP and accessible from the MIEMM page.

Observations

There are some specific rules concerning the written report and the oral presentation of the dissertation.
Thesis (Provisional Version)
Candidates write provisional versions of thesis. The reports shall not exceed sixty pages. Appendixes are allowed. Appendixes may not be fundamental to interpretation and discussion of the work.
The provisional version is printed on one side of A4 sheets with 1.5 line spacing and cannot be written in letter less than the equivalent to Trebuchet size 11. The margins should be large (2.5 cm for the four margins).
Provisional versions of theses are submitted to the jury and corrected in accordance with the indications of the jury, if necessary.
Thesis (Final version)
The final version, with the corrections imposed by the jury, will be printed on A4 sheets of double-sided with 1.5 lines spacing and cannot be written in letter less than the equivalent to Trebuchet size 11. The margins should be large (2.5 cm for the four margins).
The first page (not numbered) of the thesis must indicate the title of the thesis, the author's name, the supervisor(s) name(s) and affiliation(s), and the date of the written report. On the back of this page should be mentioned the Constitution of the Evaluation Panel and date and place of oral presentation of thesis.
