Objectives

To provide students with an integrated view of the different geophysical methods available, within their geological context, namely: the physical principles they are based on, the most commonly used interpretation techniques, the related equipments and application domains in particular mining, geotechnics and geo-environment.

Program

Presentation. Course overview; resume of the different methods to be developed. Surface geological exploration. Geological exploration in mines. Mineralogical, regional, statistical and geochemical guides, etc…
Gravimetric method; radiometric method; magnetic method; electrical method including spontaneous and induced polarization, electrical profiles, vertical electrical sounding (VES); electromagnetic methods including VLF and ground penetrating radar (GPR); seismic methods including refraction, reflection, down-hole, cross-hole, tomography.
For each method:
- its geological context;
- description of physical principles, field survey techniques and related equipments and interpretation techniques; in some cases such as in gravimetry, seismics and resistivity, the direct and inverse problems will be considered;
- discussion about the application domains.

Theoretical-practical complements of the considered subjects, namely related to the direct problem.
Presentation of geophysical equipments, namely for resistivity and seismics, and their use during field classes, in short site investigation surveys.
Interpretations examples with field data: In practical classes it will also be made basic interpretation of refraction seismics, as well as presentation of other complex interpretations in other geophysical surveys.
It will also be presented small practical examples for solving with the aid of calculators, spreadsheet Excel or Matlab. It will also be used public domain simulation software for the direct problem.

Exame 4,00
Trabalho escrito 20,00
Exame 2,00
Total: - 0,00

Eligibility for exams

Students cannot exceed the absence limit according to the General Evaluation Rules in force.
They must have six or a higher mark in the global evaluation during the semester, which includes: two tests, assignments and performance.
The frequency attainment grade is obtained by the average of the weights that follow.

Calculation formula of final grade

Frequency attainment grade:
20% for assignments and performance,
80% for the first and second mid-term exams.
First final exam mark: frequency grade if positive; in this case, students can do the re-sit exam only if they intend to improve the classification.
Students with a grade inferior to six marks, or with more absences than the maximum number of absences allowed according to the evaluation rules, will not attain frequency.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Not foreseen.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

According to the general evaluation rules.

Classification improvement

Re-sit exam and/or oral exam.
