Objectives

The course of Geology II aims to bring students understand that Plate Tectonics is a paradigm applicable in the interpretation of various geological processes and materials. An applied approach to this main purpose will be tried through the study of the Geology of Portugal, its main geological units and associated mineral deposits.

The course contains an important practical component which includes: reading and interpretation of geological maps, the preparation of geological profiles, the geometric resolution of problems with faults, and the use of stereographic projection in structural data analysis (both linear and planar structures).

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the Geology II course students should have acquired the ability to read and interpret geological maps, including those that are published by the Geological Survey, and to use those maps during field work. In addition they should also be able to resolve structural with the use of various types of projections, in particular the stereographic projection.

Program

Chapter I - The Portuguese territory in the context of the Variscan and Alpine mountain chains. Morphostructural units in the Iberian Peninsula. The Iberian massif: its definition, palaeogeographic and tectonic zonality.

Chapter II – Concept of Wilson Cycle. Divergent stages: intracontinental rift; early and advanced oceanization; Convergent stages: transformation of passive margin into an active margin, nucleation of a subduction zone. Magmatic arcs associated to a subduction zone, ophiolitic obduction; continental collision and genesis of mountain chains.

Chapter III – The Variscan cycle in the Portuguese part of the Iberian Massif. Geology and mineral deposits of Portugal. Central Iberian Zone, Galicia – Trás-os-Montes Zone, Ossa-Morena Zone and South Portuguese Zone.

Chapter IV – Post Variscan sedimentary cover of Lusitanian, Algarve, and Tagus and Sado basins. The Alpine influence in the Atlantic cycle in Portugal. Non-metallic mineral deposits of the post Variscan sedimentary cover.

Mandatory literature

Teaching methods and learning activities

The theoretical lectures will be held with various types of didactic materials:  geological samples from the Museum of the Mining Department; Geological maps and educational schemes representative of the various geodynamicenvironments.

Practical classes: Structural data collection in the field; use of topographic and geological maps in the field; practical works with software for stereographic projection; structural problemsrelated tomining activities.

Eligibility for exams

To obtain attendance in the Geology II course is necessary: Do not exceed the maximum limit of classes missed (25% of the total theoretical and practical classes); deliver the reports of the field work.

Calculation formula of final grade

The calculation of the final classification will be obtained by considering: 40% of the practical reports classification, 30% of the field work; 30% of the average classification of the two mini-tests.
