Objectives

In the last few years, there has been a remarkable development of new materials and techniques, due to demands of the construction industry and environmental concerns related to sustainability. This implies a clear understanding of behaviour of materials, characteristics of different products, application techniques and structural performance.

The main subjects of this course will be the following:
Materials: Durability; Sustainability; eco efficient additions such as rice husk ash- RHA; Waste materials in concrete; Special types of concrete; Self compacting concrete, polymer concrete; glassfiber reinforced concrete (GRC); composite materials with reinforced fibers GFPR (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer), CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) and AFRP (Aramid Fiber Reinforced Plastic); aluminium; material characterization for short or long term durability
Techniques: controlled permeability formwork (CPF); special techniques for concrete; hardening techniques by addition of FRP (Fiber reinforced polymer) systems; construction with aluminium alloys; quality control procedures

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes are based e on oral presentations of each subject involving the use of the black board, overhead projection, powerpoint presentations and films. At the end of some of the subjects, students will have the chance to solve pratical problems. Some of the material shown during these classes will be available in the homepage.
Some of the subjects dealt with in the theoretical classes, such as Durability and Special Types of Concrete, will also be focused on in the practical classes. These practical classes will comprise experimental assignments carried out in the Laboratory for full comprehension of these subjects.

Theoretical-practical classes on Composites Materials will comprise of application exercises related to new criteria of material design and production.
These exercises will cover the subjects such as reinforcement flexion, increase in compression and ductility of structural elements.
From time to time, practical classes will be held in the Laboratory of Structures and INEGI, in order to assess properties of materials (according to standards).
Lectures, sessions and technical visits to construction sites involving new materials and new construction techniques may be organized.

Eligibility for exams

According to the General Evaluation Rules in FEUP, students cannot miss more than three classes.

Calculation formula of final grade

1. Knowledge assessment

Students will be assessed based on written exams (paragraph 2, Article 1 of General Evaluation Rules of FEUP)

2. Continuous Assessment
The continuous assessment component will be based on two mini-tests (to be held during class on dates scheduled at the beginning of the semester). These are closed book tests, and each of them will last 1h 30m (maximum 2 hours). The assessment grade range is 0 to 20.

3. Recovery exam
According to the General Evaluation Rules in FEUP

4. Final Mark
The Final Mark is the arithmetic average of the grades obtained in the two mini-tests. In each of the mini-tests a minimum grade of 6 out of 20 must be obtained. If the grade of one of the mini-tests is 6 or lower, this will be the final mark.
A Pass corresponds to a minimum final mark of 10 out of 20 (paragraph 1, Article 4 of General Evaluation Rules in FEUP). According to General Evaluation Rules in FEUP, if students attend the Recovery exam, the final mark will be the best mark between the Recovery exam grade and continuous assessment grade.
A Final mark of 18 or more out of 20, can only be achieved after an extra oral exam.

Students whose attendance in classes is not compulsory (according to line a) and b) of paragraph 3 of Article 4 of General Evaluation Rules in FEUP), will be assessed based on grades obtained in the two mini-tests.

Students who are unable to attend the mini-tests (absence must be justified officially), may be assessed on other dates.

Students whose attendance in classes is not compulsory (according to a) and b) of paragraph 3 of Article 4 of General Evaluation Rulesin FEUP), will be assessed based on two mini-tests (paragraph II- “Final Mark”).
The Final Mark will be based on the criteria defined on the paragraph IV – “Final Mark”

SPECIAL RULES FOR MOBILITY STUDENTS:
Proficiency in Portuguese and/or English;
Previous attendance of introductory graduate courses in the scientific field addressed in this module;
Assessment grade by exam and/or coursework(s) defined in accordance with the student´s profile.

Classification improvement
