Objectives

To give to the students and future Civil Engineers the fundamental concepts of Environmental and Urban Hydraulics within the Water Cycle component included in the water supply and drainage water systems areas. The main goal is to prepare the students and prepare them for the project, for its evaluation, analysis and discussion as well as for the works supervision and exploration of Water Supply Systems’ infrastructures components. Special emphasis will be given to the normative aspects of construction and exploration of the infrastructures’ hydraulic components.

Program

Water Supply and Drainage Systems and its situation in Portugal. Water for human use. Legislation and Regulations. Quality certification in Water Supply Systems. Elaboration of water supply. Water needs. Flow rate measurement. Pipes materials for water amd drainage systems. Installation. Water treatment supply. Water Hammer in Pumping Systems. Regularization and Storage. Water supply lift station. Delivery. Water Disinfection during transport. Wastewater sewage. Transportation of Wastewater under pressure. Wastewater lift station. Wastewater treatment. Wastewater flow rate measurement. Discharge of effluents. Sludge Final destiny. Remote management. Maintenance of Water Supply and Drainage Systems.

Mandatory literature

Apontamentos da disciplina para o corrente Ano Lectivo de 2006/2007 e disponibilizados no “sítio” da disciplina.

Complementary Bibliography

Outros elementos relativos a temas específicos, a indicar nas sessões teóricas e práticas.
Manual de Saneamento Básico - Volumes 1 e 2 (Ministério do Ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais).
Regulamentação e Legislação em vigor.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Exposition of contents in theoretical classes guided by visual documentation. Resolution of practical problems of project. Simulation of different components of the Water Supply and drainage Systems in practical characteristics sessions. The different teachers of the course will supervise the evolution of the several practical assignments proposed, which will be delivered for evaluation in report format.

Software

EPANET

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Eligibility for exams

Bearing in mind that this is a descriptive and practical course, the students are advised to attend and participate in all the classes (practical and theoretical). There will be absence control in all the classes (frequency attainment follows the FEUP’s rules).

Calculation formula of final grade

The final grade of the written exam is 17 marks and the one of the practical assignments is 3 marks.

Examinations or Special Assignments

None

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

As specified on FEUP’s Evaluation Rules

Classification improvement

As specified on FEUP’s Evaluation Rules

Observations

Working time estimated out of class: 4 hours
The students who prove, before the Department of Civil Engineering, that they cannot attend practical classes and therefore cannot elaborate and deliver the practical assignments reports, must declare it to teachers until the exam,s date, being the final classification obtained with the written exam, which will be rated for 20 marks.
