Objectives

This subject aims to teach: concepts, principles and primary theories reproducing the reality of the different types of flow; within scope of the subject also teach theories and methods, used in Civil Engineering, in planning and in design of hydraulic works and structures; the methods used to characterize flow behaviour.

Program

Chapter 1: Hydraulic machines
Main types. Performance when integrated in the hydraulic circuit. Main definitions related to turbines and pumps.

Chapter 2 –Pipe flows and closed conduits (part 2)
Gravity pipelines. Boosting pipes. Pipe networks. Varied flow in closed conduits.

Chapter 3 – Open channel flows
General characteristics. Channel types and channel geometry. Application of Bernoulli's energy equation. Energy loss equations. Specific Energy. Energy surfaces. Critical parameters. Application of the principle of conservation of momentum. Flow control. Uniform flow in channels. Gradually varied flow: backwater effect in prismatic channels (constant flow rate); backwater curve ouline. Hydraulic jump. Applications to natural channels: backwater curve outline.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures on concepts, principles and theories concerning different types of flow. Study of the fundamental issues and design regarding (i) hydraulic machines, (ii) flow under pressure (gravity and boosting pipes and pipe network system), (iii) open channel flow (artificial channels and extension of this notion to natural channels).
Practicals will be focused in problem solving and general design. Laboratory sessions will be carried out and consist of 6 sessions (2 of introduction to practicals and 4 practical assignments).
