Objectives
Teaching the fundamental concepts, principles and theories that lead to the understanding the reality of the several types of flows.
Presentation of theories and strategies used in Civil Engineering for the conception and planning of projects and hydraulic structures
Teaching the strategies used to characterize the behaviour.
Program
1 – General Equations of Fluids Mechanics
2 - Fundamental Theorems of Fluids Mechanics: Bernoulli’s Principle. Momentum Theorem
3 – Hydrostatics: Fundamental Principle. Impulsions on surfaces. Forces on surfaces.
4 – Hydraulic similarity: complete and incomplete similarity
5 – Types of flow. Interior flow: Resistance formulas. Exterior flow. Laminar and turbulent flows.
6 – Pressure flow (1st part): Establishing the flow. Nikuradse’s experiments. Flow laws (smooth, transition and turbulent). Continuous friction loss. Resistance formulas. Local friction loss.
7 – Holes and Weirs: Flow laws in all kinds of holes and on sharp and broad-crested weirs
Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical classes that give a focus, on a first phase, on the basic principles – general and fundamental equations and principles – of (static and dynamic) Fluids Mechanics, oriented towards a global application on the incompressible fluids; on a second phase, the general concepts and principles of Fluids Mechanics are covered, as well as those underlying (i) to the Hydraulic Similarity, (ii) to the different types of flows and (iii) to holes and weirs; on a third phase, the basic concepts related to the basis of Hydraulics regarding pressure flow in pipes are presented.
Practical classes to solve application problems and also for the phenomenon visualization in didactical stands of laboratory demonstration.
Evaluation Type
Evaluation with final exam
Eligibility for exams
It follows the General Evaluation Rules of FEUP.
Calculation formula of final grade
Final Exam (EF) that weighs 100%.
The writing examination (without consultation) is 1 hour long. The practical part (with consultation) is 2 hours long. Usually both cases have the same mark.
Examinations or Special Assignments
