Objectives

·To motivate for the understanding of civil engineering endeavours
·To initiate a professional attitude.
·To contribute for the understanding of the evolution and development of the foundations of Civil Engineering

Program

·Becoming an engineer and the differences between Civil Engineering and the other fields of engineering.
·The Ancient World: evolution of the constructive concepts applied to bridges, aqueducts, highways, buildings and hydraulic and harbour works.
·The constructive evolution in the Middle Ages.
·Basic problems of Statics and the foundations of the Theory of the Strength of Materials.
·Building techniques of Renaissance and Baroque.
·The advent of Civil Engineering in the 17th and 18th centuries: building materials, statics applied to construction and Hydraulic Engineering evolution.
·The origins of the Structural Analysis and the evolution of Mechanics (1750-1850).
·The Industrial Revolution: coal, steam, railways. The new materials: iron, steel, reinforced concrete.
·Civil Engineering from the 19th century to the present.
·Achievements of Civil Engineering in Portugal.

Guest speakers will present some classes on specific themes, such as bridges, large dams, harbours, airports.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theory classes meet twice a week and include 3 guest speakers and a study visit.

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

SPECIAL RULES FOR MOBILITY STUDENTS:
Proficiency in Portuguese and/or English;
Previous attendance of introductory graduate courses in the scientific field addressed in this module;
Evaluation by exam and/or coursework(s) defined in accordance with student profile.
