Objectives
Aims
The aims of this course unit are the following:
(i) to present a set of diverse and complex technical/professional situations, being based on students’ own experience of the problems they came across while writing the dissertation;
(ii) to improve and complement students’ presentation, argumentation and participation skills in technical discussions;
(iii) to endow students with critical skills, both in methodological terms (validation, verification, assessment) and ethical terms;
As a complement, this course unit also aims to deepen students’ knowledge in the area of Masters project or dissertation, by establishing meticulous research criteria and stimulating research organization for each dissertation.
Learning Outcomes
After the successful completion of this course unit, students should be capable of:
- critically assessing their work in a theoretical, methodological, professional and ethical perspective;
- comparing their approaches and results with other projects;
- displaying and presenting a project and arguing and supporting a discussion;
- summarising a great project (dissertation) in different formats (presentation, scientific article);
Program
Theoretical and practical fundamentals of Information Science and interdisciplinary aspects, both in the more specific field of Information Science and Communication, and in the wider field of Applied Social Sciences.
Teaching methods and learning activities
In theoretical-practical classes students present, discus and defend their dissertation work. They also plan and assess the presentations and scientific article, which they have to write.
Tutorial sessions are focused on the discussion of specific problems related to the dissertation.

Eligibility for exams
According to General Evaluation Rules of FEUP.
Students have to give two presentations and write a scientific article
Calculation formula of final grade
Assessment components:
- Presentations, discussion and defense of the own project: 50% of the final grade
- Participation in the debate and discussion of other projects: 10% of the final grade
- Mid-term dissertation report: 40% of the final grade
Optional: A scientific article commenting the dissertation: two marks
Examinations or Special Assignments

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
Working students, students’ association leaders, etc should schedule their presentations and other assessment components with the professor.
Classification improvement
Students may only improve the grade of the scientific article.
Observations
Students who are not writing their dissertations in Porto, and who have justified their absence, have to schedule alternative ways of presenting and discussing their projects (by using, for example common communication technologies, such as Skype, etc).
