Objectives

The development of capacities of synthesis and analysis of Chemical Processes, in an open framework, to identify viable processes and apply criteria to select the best suited one.
To develop an integrated project, working in teams, of a new industrial plant facility or the retrofitting of an existing plant that will include:
-definition/selection of an adequate operation sequence (flowsheet);
-preparation of a detailed mass and energy balances;
-design and specification of main required process equipment;
-preliminary plant layout;
-estimation of project cost (capital, operation, financial, other) and profitability analysis;
-risk/safety analysis.

Program

The main objective of this course unit is the development of a project by the students applying the knowledge acquired in various subjects of MIEQ, with particular importance to the knowledge acquired in the subject Introduction to Engineering Project (IPE).
The project will consider the design and analysis of several pieces of equipment of an industrial installation, the economic analysis, consideration of the environmental impact and preliminary analysis of risk/safety.
The project will be conducted in groups formed by 4 and 3 and 5 (particular cases) students.

Teaching methods and learning activities

There will be weekly sessions with each group and the supervisors to evaluate the work progress and to discuss future strategies.
The progress and quality of the project is the responsibility of students. The supervisors’ responsibilities are to follow the project. The project supervisors may request partial reports if necessary.
There will be two intermediate discussions and presentations of the work: to be developed at 15 October and 26 November. These presentations will have the presence of 2 external experts with wide experience in project.
Date to finish the project report: December 21, 2012
Project presentation and discussion: 3 and 4 January 2013

Calculation formula of final grade

The evaluation of the course unit consists of three components: Component 1 – Project and project report (60%). Component 2 - Project presentation and discussion of the project and project report (20%). Component 3 - Assessment of supervisors based on all the tasks of the course unit. Component 3 will allow performing an individual evaluation of each group element.
Evaluation will only be equal to or greater than 18 in the component 1 if the project is very good and if the report is presented without spelling errors.
The presentation of the work will have a total duration of 40 minutes (20 minutes for presentation and 20 minutes for discussion, including supervisors and the external experts).
