Objectives
Background:
Robotics and automatic transport and storage systems are essential technologies adopted by manufacturing industries. So it is recognized that a mechanical engineer specialized in the automation area, must be familiar with these technologies, its applications and functioning. This unit aims to prepare the students to be able to recognize the suitability and implications of applying the robotics technology and automatic transport and storage systems to specific industrial applications.
Specific Aims:
To provide the students with the necessary tools so they can be able to understand, characterize, specify and use of robotic manipulators, automatic transport and storage systems, as well as to program and operate industrial robotic manipulators.
Previous knowledge:
Automatic control.
Rigid body kinematics.
Driving technologies.
Sensors and instrumentation.
Industrial computing - Programmable Logic Controllers.
Percentual Distribution:
Scientific component (establishes and develops scientific bases) – 30%
Technological component (apply to design and process operation) - 70%
Learning outcomes:
By the end of this course the student will be able to:
- Identify and evaluate the potential use of robotic manipulator systems as well as explain and determine their limitations;
- Identify and classify various types of industrial robots and explain its principles of operation;
- Specify a solution of a robotic cell and critically examine a proposal for a given problem;
- To program an industrial robot;
- Conduct a kinematic analysis of a robotic manipulator;
- Describe the operation of trajectory generation systems used in robotic manipulators;
- Determine the needs of automation for a particular application using robotic manipulators;
- Describe the objectives and main functions associated with transport systems and storage, and explain its importance within an industrial environment;
- Distinguish between solutions based on conveyor belts, automatically guided vehicles of the type "AGV" and solutions based on manual systems;
- Identify and evaluate the alternatives for automatic storage systems.

Teaching methods and learning activities
This course comprises exposition classes supported by audiovisual means related to technology and to the use of automatic systems.
The two hours classes are used to complement the exposition classes, allowing the students to deeply study the robotic manipulators, transport and storage systems, the contact with industrial robots, their use and their application in industrial tasks.
