Objectives
BACKGROUND:
Operational Research (OR) is a fundamental method for the approach of decision making processes in many different feels of science. Engineers, in particular, can profit with the knowledge of the techniques used by OR for problems solving.
SPECIFIC AIMS:
Introduction of a global vision of OR, stressing, in particular, its role as a method of approach to decision processes. Acquisition of knowledge to formulate and solve linear programming. Acquisition of knowledge for project management. Acquisition of knowledge to decision analysis
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:
- Basic knowlegle in Statistics
PERCENTUAL DISTRIBUTION:
Scientific component: 90%
Technological component: 10%
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of the course, the students shall be able to:
1) Formulate of Linear Programming models.
2) Understand and know how to apply algorithms to obtain the optimal solutions for those problems.
3) Understand and know how to apply techniques for project management.
4) define the structure for decision problems.
Program
OR Methodology: Brief historical note. .
OR Techniques: Linear programming (problem formulation, solving the problem by the simplex method, sensitivity analysis; formulation and solving methods for the transport and assignment problems). PROJECT MANAGEMENT (general organizational aspects, techniques for the planning and control of time, cost and other resources - CPM and PERT methods). DECISION ANALYSIS. Structure of a decision problem. Terminal decisions based on prior information. Expected value of perfect information. Decision trees. Sequencial decisions.

Teaching methods and learning activities
In the context of this discipline, we combine classes based on the presentation of methods and techniques by the lecturers (including the discussion of real cases), classes consisting in the presentation and discussion of case studies by the students and problem solving classes.
