Objectives
Fluid Power Systems for drive, transmission and control through fluid energy: Hydraulics and Pneumatics.
On clonclusion of this course the student should be able to understand the technologies of Hydraulic and Pneumatica systems, the functional properties, sizing and selection of parts for an application.
Program
Fluid Power systems: energy and power by fluids. Main application areas. Power systems.
Pneumatic systems technology:
Compressed air: production, conditioning and distribution.
Actuators: types, properties, selection and sizing
Control valves: directional, pressura and flow control
ISO 1219 graphical representation of fluid power systems.
Pneumatic circuit analysis and simulation.
Design and selection for application.
Hydraulic systems technology:
Overall analysis of hydraulic systems applications
Pumps and motors. Actuators. Types, technology aspects, sizing. performance characteristics. Efficiency aspects.
Control valves: directional, pressure and flow control
Graphical representation
Auxiliary components: filters and filtering, cooling, instrumentation.
Hydraulic circuit analysis, sizing and design.
System and component experimental testing

The course involves:
a)formal lecture classes
b)tutorials for circuit analysis, sizing and design

Eligibility for exams
In order to attain frequency the student must attend classes within the legal limits of frequency and have minimum classification according to conditions below
Calculation formula of final grade
Final mark for this course are based on:
A) Distributed evaluation, which totals a maximum of 55% of final marking, resulting from:
A1) periodic "surprise tests"(of short duration) during formal lecture classes - 10% of final marking
A2) work group results during laboratory sessions - 10% of final marking
A3) special mid-term laboratory session individual evaluation - 15% of final marking
A4) end-of-term laboratory session individual evaluation - 20% of final marking
B) Final written exam, which totals a maximum of 45% of final marking
Remark: students are only approved in the course if computed final mark is above 9,5 units out of 20, subject to none of the partial evaluation (distributed and final exam) are not evaluated below 8,5 units

Working students may apply for a special evaluation procedure, based on:
A) one individual oral and written examination, in laboratory environment, with maximum value of 50% of final marking
B) one individual written exam, with maximum value of 50% of final marking
Classification improvement
A special evaluation improvement session may be possible for students.
A special oral and written individual examination may be undertaken to upgrade the distributed evaluation marking, and
A special written examination may be undertaken to upgrade the marking attributed to the final written exam.
