Objectives

At the end of this course unit students will be able to:
- Conduct tests of filtration at constant pressure and compare the results with those provided by theoretical models, and to characterize the cake in terms of compressibility;
- Measure pressure drops in fixed and fluidized beds, measure the porosity of a bed and, using different models, predict the pressure drop and porosity in fixed and fluidized beds, respectively.
- Determine experimentally the overall heat transfer coefficients in a serpentine immersed in a stirred tank under transient conditions and recognize, through its use, the advantages of an automatic data acquisition.
- Distinguish between different variables, those that most enhance the effect of radiation on the temperature measurement of an air flow and how to reduce the error introduced by the radiation in that measurement.
- Measure the concentration of CO2, CO and O2 using a portable analyzer and perform calculations to obtain other relevant information relating to combustion processes.
- Determine experimentally the response times of several temperature sensors in different conditions of measurement and identify the variables that can alter those response times.
- Determine experimentally the efficiency of some heating processes of water for domestic use.
- Write technical and scientific reports describing the results obtained in experimental work, analysis and main conclusions.
- Make oral presentation related with one of the subjects studied.

Program

As part of this laboratory course the following experiments will be conducted:
- Filtration at constant pressure (DEQ);
- Homogeneous fluidization- (DEQ);
- Determination of overall heat transfer coefficients in a serpentine immersed in a stirred tank (DEQ);
- Determination of the efficiency of a heating water process using a gas stove (DEMec);
- Dynamic response of temperature sensors (DEMec);
- Analysis of combustion products of a stove fueled with natural gas (DEMec);
- Effect of radiation on the temperature measurement of an air stream (DEMec).

Teaching methods and learning activities

Performance of scheduled laboratory experiments. Short exposures about the experimental work. The classes will run in two different laboratories (one in the DEQ department and other in DEMec department).

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Description Type Time (hours) Weight (%) End date
Attendance (estimated) Participação presencial 0,00
Total: - 0,00

Eligibility for exams

- The laboratory experiments are compulsory for all students, including those under article 4, a) and b).

- The minimum grade is 10 (scale 0-20).

Calculation formula of final grade

The course has only a laboratory component.

The final classification of the course unit will be calculated using the arithmetic mean of the final grades obtained in the DEMec and DEQ.

In DEMec the final grade is calculated as follows: elaboration of reports with a weight of 70% of the final grade, filling the sheet with a summary of results, to be delivered at the end of each class, with a weight of 10% in the final grade, do mini tests about the information contained in the protocol of the experimental works and about the work itself to be delivery at the end of each laboratory class, with a weight of 20% in the final part. In the last class in DEMec there will be a mutual assessment of performance by the elements of each group in order to assign to each element the grade of the reports component in consonance with his/her actual effort.

DEQ module: The classification is calculated as follows: completion of a full report of the work done (40%), do a short report about another work (20%), do an oral presentation (30%); continuous assessment based on performance in class (10%).

Examinations or Special Assignments

Not applicable

Classification improvement

Students wishing to improve his/her grade should make an experimental work, write the corresponding full report, and do an oral presentation on one of the other work done in the DEQ and DEMec.
