Objectives

In this semester the student should make a first approach to some important energy industries, its process flow diagrams, equipments and operational rules.

Safety and environments actual demands will be important subjects to be studied in particular when connected with energy integration process.

Program

Refination Process – fuels production
Petrochemical Process – aromatics production and other downstream products
Biofuels – bioethanol and biodiesel (1º and 2ª generation)
Cogeneration – different applications
Electric energy production from hydraulic sources - hydroelectric-power barrage
Energy mass balance/ Energy management/ Energy audits
Energy optimization in industrial equipments: pumps, compressors, turbines, boilers, heaters, etc – some examples
Environment impact in energy and heat production
Energy and economy

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical Part:
Thematic slide presentations with power-point and other different support material.
Industrial case studies analysis.
Practice Part:
Porto Refinery visit to establish the first contact with the lay out of the units, its equipments, products and catalysts.
