Objectives

To establish a close relationship between different energy resources, related industrial applications and technologies.

Special focus should be done to portuguese, european and world statistics and to environment and safety legislation.

Program

The Student should learn about:

•Energy. General definitions. History. Forms of energy. Transformation of energy.
•Portugal, Europe and Word energy resources and consumption
•Environment and energy resources
•Fuels - Coal, Crude and Natural Gas. History. Advantages and disadvantages. Different industrial applications
•Biofuels – History and policy. First, second and third generation of biofuels. Advantages and disadvantages. Different industrial applications
•Hydropower – Electricity generation. Industrial hydroelectric plants. Major schemes under construction. Advantages and disadvantages.
•Nuclear Power – Use. History. Nuclear reactor technology (fission and fusion). Life cycle. Debate on nuclear power. Industrial applications – debate on nuclear power.
•Renewable energy - Different sources (biological material, wind, sun, waves, geothermic) and all different associates industries. Historic applications and European Directives.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Thematic slide presentations with power-point and other different support material.
Industrial case studies analysis.
