Objectives
To study and plan unit operation that involve mass and heat transfer, separately or simultaneously, namely solid-liquid/gas, solid-solid and gas-liquid operation/separation.
Program
1- Study and plan of installations that include internal fluid flow:
- Pumps and fans
- Flow in a branched pipe
- Compressible fluid flow
- Non-Newtonian fluid flow
- Stirring and mixing
2- Study and plan of installations that include fluid and particles flow
- Flow in fixed and fluidized porous beds
- Elutriation, sedimentation and pneumatic transport
- Filtering
- Cyclones
3- Study of some physical-mechanical separation processes
- Centrifugation
- Grinding and sifting
4 – Study and project of simultaneous heat and mass transfer processes
- Humidification
- cooling towers
- dryers

Teaching methods and learning activities
In theoretical classes the fundamental concepts to acquire knowledge are exposed. We will also solve illustrative applications of the exposed theoretical concepts.
In theoretical-practical classes, the students will solve exercises individually or in groups. These exercises are previously distributed so that the students can previously study and make the most of classes.
Software
MS-Excel (resolução de problemas)
Evaluation Type
Distributed evaluation with final exam

Eligibility for exams
The students will be encouraged to weekly deliver a problem discussed in the previous theoretical-practical class. The frequency is attained by those who deliver 70% of the suggested assignments.
Calculation formula of final grade
20% will be the classification of an open project. 80% will be the classification of the final exam. The students with frequency of the previous years can do only the final exam.
Examinations or Special Assignments
In the open project, the students must choose a real situation to study, must project simple equipment, must take decisions about materials, lay-out and costs.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
Exam, accordingly to the calendar drawn by DEQ.
Classification improvement
Re-sit Exam. This exam will always be 80% of the final classification
