Objectives
This course aims to present different classes of materials to the students, using the basic knowledge of atomic and molecular structure. The most innovative trends of Materials Science and Engineering will be illustrated with a specific class of materials. The course ends with the reference to some important mechanisms of materials deterioration.

1st Unit: General aspects of engineering materials
Chapter 1 – Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering

2nd Unit: Structure
Chapter 2 – Crystal Structures and Crystal Geometry
Atomic structure: technological relevance; Materials properties and types of atomic and molecular bonding; Lattices, indexes and crystallographic planes; Crystal Systems and Bravais lattices; Main crystal structures of metals; Miller indexes to crystallographic planes in cubic unit cells; Volume, planar and linear density in unit cells; Polymorphism or allotropy; Determination of crystal structures
Chapter 3 – Atom and Ion Movements in Materials
Applications of diffusion; Mechanisms for diffusion in solids; Diffusion and materials processing
Chapter 4 - Solidification, Crystal defects
Solidification in metals; Solidification in single crystal; Metallic solid solutions; Crystal defects; Stress and deformation; Mechanical properties
Chapter 5 – Solid solutions and phase diagrams
Isomorphous binary systems; Non-equilibrium solidification of metallic alloys; Ternary phase diagram; Eutetic phase diagrams
3rd Unit: Properties, applications, innovation and new technologies
Chapter 6 – Polymer materials

Chapter 7 – Steels and Cast irons
