Objectives
The course provides the basic aspects of electrochemistry and surface phenomena and their applications to industrial situations.
Program
Theoretical classes
1. Electrolytical conduction (conductivity, molar conductivity, transport numbers, hydration of ions).
2. Electrode potentials (cells, potential vs. activity, standard electrodes, reference electrodes, thermodynamic aspects, concentration cells).
3. Applications of electromotive forces (solubility product, pH, ion selective electrodes, transport numbers).
4. Kinetics of charge transfer processes (polarization, electrical double layers, overpotential).
5. Surface phenomena (capillarity, surface tension and surface energy, zeta potential, liquid-solid interfaces, contact angle).
The weights given to the five chapters are similar.
Practical classes
The practical classes have three components:
1.Exercises for concepts application;
2.Laboratory demonstrative assignments to learn some electrochemical techniques;
3.Research laboratory assignment, chosen by the students, presented and discussed in public.
Mandatory literature

Teaching methods and learning activities
The subjects are presented and discussed with the students, incorporating industrial examples whenever appropriate. In the lab sessions the students carry out a series of set experimental works and a small research project.
Evaluation Type
Distributed evaluation without final exam

Eligibility for exams
The student must have a positive mark (equal to or higher than 10 in 20) in the laboratory sessions.
Calculation formula of final grade
Final grade = 0,70*(mini-tests average) + 0,30*(practical assignments grade)
Examinations or Special Assignments
N/A
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
The special evaluation students will have to do a 2hour practical assignment and an exam on all the contents.
Classification improvement
To improve their classifications, the ordinary evaluation students will have to do na exam on all the contents.
Observations
The mini-tests will be on the following dates:
7th April (12h); 12th May (12h); 2nd June (12h). For the students who didn’t get the chance to do one of the first three mini-tests, there will be a 4th one comprising the contents which were not evaluated yet.
