Knowledge of topics of design and dimensioning of electrical LV installations and equipments currently used in those kind of facilities.
• Understanding the structure of low and medium voltage electrical installations in terms of the National Electric System. [CDIO Skills 1.2, 2.3]
• Knowledge of the characteristics and principles of operation of low voltage electrical apparatus. Developing capacities for recognition and selection them. [CDIO Skills 1.2, 2.3]
• Understanding simple electrical diagrams. [CDIO Skills 2.1, 2.3]
• Knowledge of Portuguese LV regulamentations. [CDIO Skills 1.2]
• Ability to design and dimensioning of simple electrical installations. [CDIO Skills 1.2, 2.1, 2]
· Electrical Installations: some fundamental concepts. · The electrical sector in Portugal: Exploitation of the distribution networks in MV and LV. · Switchgear installations for medium voltage: Constitution and main types. · Brief references about the execution of electrical projects concerning low voltage installations (residential buildings). · Underground cables. Tables of acceptable maximum currents. · Low Voltage and Medium Voltage equipment. · Electromagnetic contactors. Electrical schemes. · Evaluation of short circuit currents. · Dimensioning of electrical cables and their protections. Circuit breakers and fuses. · People's security in electrical installations. Earth electrodes. · Basic Concepts about lamps, luminaires and lightning. · Basic Concepts about Power Factor Correction.
· Theoretical classes: Use of transparencies / electronic documents. The exhibition is illustrated with the visualization of the equipments, whenever such it is possible. · Practical classes: Resolution of problems belonging to a list previously distributed the students. · Visits to a medium voltage switchgear installation and to a factory of electrical cables manufacturing.

The students must not exceed the absence limit established to the practical classes. These are the skills which are assessed: CDIO Syllabus- a) 1.2, 2.1; b) 1.2, 2.3; c) 1.2, 2.1, 2.3.
CLASS_FINAL(NF) = 0,75 x CLASS_Exam(NE) + 0,20 x CLASS_FirstWork + 0,05 x CLASS_SecondWork.
• First Work: A problem to be solved about Dimensioning of electrical cables.
• Second Work: A pratical one.
Identical to the evaluation procedure established to the ordinary students.
• CLASS_FINAL(NF) = 0,75 x CLASS_Exam(NE) + 0,20 x CLASS_FirstWork + 0,05 x CLASS_SecondWork.
• Note: You can only improve the Exam classification.
• Note 1: Transparencies / electronic documents used on theorethical classes, are provided to students, covering most of the subjects. However, we recommend the consultation of the catalogs of manufacturers of electrical equipment.
• Note 2: There will be two study tours inside the campus of FEUP. These visits take place during the practical sessions.
