Objectives

This course unit aims to endow students with fundamental knowledge in electric machines, especially in electric transformers and induction motors. Special emphasis will be given to the classification, characteristics of construction, functioning principles, modelling and performance characteristics in steady-state, testing and general rules of selection, installation, use and maintenance of electric machines as autonomous rquipment and as an element of a more complex system.

To complete this course unit, students have to:
1. acquire technical knowledge in the classification, composition and phenomena which are part of the functioning of electric machines. Electric transformers and induction motors: general rules of selection, installation, use and maintenance.
Students should be capable of applying their knowledge in the formulation, resolution and discussion of problems related to the above mentioned themes and its insertion in electrical energy systems (CDIO Syllabus 1.2 and 2.1).
Students will have the chance to get familiar with these themes in classes (theoretical sessions dedicated to the presentation and discussion of the main themes of the course unit; theoretical-practical sessions dedicated to the analysis and resolution of theoretical-practical problems). It will take place tests to assess these skills.
2. acquire knowledge in electric machine testing and experimental research about the functioning of transforms and induction motors, by doing laboratory assignments (CDIO Syllabus 2.2). These skills will be assessed by supervising students’ laboratory assignments and by the evaluation of the respective reports.
3. develop professional skills and attitudes, both at an personal level (autonomous study and preparation of work) and group level (participation in group assignments during theoretical-practical and laboratory assignments).
Students will be asked to have an active attitude towards professors and colleagues, regarding research of information, planning, preparing and carrying out an assignment (laboratory tests or resolution of theoretical-practical problems), as well as having a correct attitude in the laboratory, by respecting safety standards, and rules of using equipment and testing procedures (CDIO Syllabus 2.5).
These skills will be assessed by supervising students during classes and tests.
4. show communication skills, both oral (answering to questions during classes) and written (reports) (CDIO Syllabus 3.2).

Program

The program of this course unit comprises the following themes:
Chapter 1- ELECTRIC MACHINERY FUNDAMENTALS
Fundamental aspects regarding the classification, composition and phenomena always asociated to the functioning of electric machines; general rules to the selection, installation, use and maintenance.
Chapter 2- ELECTRIC TRANSFORMERS
Specific aspects of their composition, theory, performance, modelling and testing of single phase electric transformers; general concepts about other transformers: three-phase power transformers, autotransformers, measurement and protection transformers
Chapter 3- INTRODUCTION TO ROTATING ELECTRICAL MACHINES
Fundamentals of composition, performance and use of rotating electrical machines, particularly as motors
Chapter 4- NDUCTION MOTORS
Specific aspects of its composition, theory, performance and modelling of induction motors (sigle- and three-phase); starting, bracking, reversing and speed variation; control strategies

Teaching methods and learning activities

Classes:
Theoretical classes: presentation of the themes of the course unit by the professor
Theoretical-practical classes: resolution of numeric exercises by the students under the supervision of the professor
Laboratory classes: development of an experimental assignment by groups of students (maximum of 3 students in each group) supervised by the professor and the laboratory technician.

Outside of class:
Besides regular study, students will be asked to write reports about their laboratory assignments, which will be taken into account in the final grade.
Students can schedule a meeting with the professors during office hours.

Eligibility for exams

Students cannot miss more classes than allowed by the rules (3 theoretical-practical/laboratory classes).
Students have to reach a minimum grade of 50% in the continuous assessment component.

Calculation formula of final grade

1- Final Exam (written; individual; 3 hours) = 80%
Students can opt to substitute this exam by two individual written tests. The first will take place on 21st April and it will cover chapter 1 and 2. The second will cover chapter 3 and 4 and it will take place during the normal season of exams. Each of these tests is worth 40% of the final grade and they will last 2 hours.
2- Continuous Assessment = 20%
Assessment of the laboratory assignments (preparation, carrying out the 3 assignments and report)

COMMENTS:
a) If students do not attend laboratory classes, and if they are not replaced, students will earn a ZERO in the assignment.
b) Students will have a chance to repeat their exams at recurso (resit) season by attending a new exam.

Examinations or Special Assignments

- 3 laboratory assignments by groups of students and supervised by the professor (laboratory of electrical machinery)
- 2 individual written tests or a final exam (normal season)

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students with a special status who did not attend this course in the previous year will be assessed in the following way:
Final Exam (Written): 80%
Laboratory Exam (Oral): 20%

COMMENTS:
a) Laboratory exam is only mandatory for students which have a special status and did not do laboratory assignments. Laboratory exam will substitute the continuous assessment component.
b) Students can opt to attend two tests instead of the final exam.

Classification improvement

Students can improve their grades by attending a new exam. However, they can only improve the grade of the exam (80%), since the continuous assessment grade will remain the same.
This exam will cover all the themes of this course unit.
