Objectives

Students should acquire the following core abilities:

- Familiarity with the main results in cryptography and the most common security mechanisms;

- Proficiency with the basic security components of networks and systems and how to use them;

- In-depth understanding of the system models underlying the design of security protocols;

- Sensitivity to the different classes of threats to information systems and the most relevant metrics used to assess them;

- Problem solving ability in security engineering.

Program

This course is centered on (i) the fundamental principles of information security when stored in digital form and transmitted over insecure channels, and (ii) on the main security tools used in contemporary communication networks and information systems. We present in some detail the main results of cryptography, namely the notion of perfect secrecy, classical ciphers, symmetric encryption and public key cryptography, as well as their application in networks, protocols and systems. We also address how to evaluate different security architectures.

The program has two parts:

1) Security Mechanisms: symmetric ciphers, public key cryptography, key distribution, authentication, hash functions;

2) Services and Security Protocols: Authentication applications, email security, IP and Web security, Intrusion Detection, Malicious Software, Firewalls.
