Objectives

This course unit aims to train students in the analysis of systems and projects in an enterprise context, namely the concepts, techniques and strategies usually used. Hence students should be capable of:
• understanding new paradigms.
• describing and explaining the principles of systems engineering.
• enumerating and explaining the main techniques of modelling and system analysis.
• describing, explaining and applying principles, concepts and techniques related to project management.
• acquiring work experience in medium-sized projects.
• acquiring work experience in a collaborative environment distributed and based on the Internet.

Program

Systems and Project Management Analysis: Framework

Systems Engineering
• Systems and their life-cycle
• The process of systems engineering
• The role of engineering in enterprise systems
• Standards
• System Engineering tools

Project Management
• Projects and life cycle (project stages): starting, planning (hierarchical decomposition of the project, setting dependencies, effort estimation, resources assignment, time allocation, diagrams, documents of a project plan); monitoring and control (measurement of a project progress, re planning); finishing.
• Areas of knowledge: integration management, scope, time management, costs management, quality management, human resources management, communication management, risk management, supply management.
• Standards
• Project Management Tools

Project teams
• Team, organisational culture, organisational policies, personal communication, meetings, logbooks, tools

Case studies (teamwork)
• Development and exploration of multidisciplinary projects in medium-sized teams

Mandatory literature

IEEE Standard for Application and Management of the Systems Engineering Process, IEEE Standards, 1998
IEEE Guide Adoption of PMI Standard A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, IEEE Standards, 2003

Teaching methods and learning activities

This course unit will be based on the presentation of the strategic framework and scope of System Analysis and Project Management, along with the presentation and discussion of cases studies.
It will be presented some extra themes if they help students carrying out their projects.
Students will have to carry out projects and they will be organised in a team.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Eligibility for exams

To be admitted to exams, students cannot miss more classes than allowed by the rules. Besides they have to actively participate in the planning and conclusion of the projects.

Calculation formula of final grade

60%- Team assessment: Students have to carry out and defend a project using methods and concepts of this course unit.
40%- Individual assessment: class participation, participation in the teamwork and attendance to the written tests.

Students have to achieve a passing grade in both assessment components (>50% in team and individual component).

Examinations or Special Assignments

As for regular students.

Classification improvement

Students have to do extras assignment in the following year.

Observations

IMPORTANT: Students have to achieve a passing grade in both assessment components (>50% in team and individual component).
