Supported Excavations
Instance: 2004/2005 - 3T
Cycles of Study/Courses
Teaching language
Portuguese
Objectives
The aim of the discipline is to make students aware of the main types of structures used to support deep excavations in urban areas. For each type of structure, the soil-structure interaction is analysed and the design methods are presented. In addition, the main construction and monitoring techniques are described.
Program
Flexible earth-retaining structures for deep excavations in urban areas. Overview of the types of structure, construction processes and technologies. External and structural design of flexible cantilever walls, single-propped walls, multi-strutted walls and multi-anchored walls. The role of soil arching. Limit equilibrium methods of design and finite element analyses. Application of limit state design according to Eurocode 7. Stability of the base of the excavation in sands and in clays. Overall stability of anchored walls. Vertical equilibrium of anchored walls. Soil anchors. Monitoring. Movements induced in the vicinity of deep excavations and strategies for their control.

Evaluation Type
Distributed evaluation with final exam
Calculation formula of final grade
The final classification is established taking as main reference the classification of the final exam. This is adjusted (upgraded) taking into account the assignment work developed by the student and its discussion with the lecturer.
Examinations or Special Assignments
Some assignments are proposed to the students in complement to the classes. They require the preliminary design of three or four types of retaining structures corresponding to practical (simplified) situations.
