Objectives
To enable Chemical Engineering students to understand and design municipal and industrial wastewater treatment processes
Program
a) Physical and chemical treatment processes of waters and wastewaters: flocculent sedimentation, zone settling, neutralization, chemical coagulation and flocculation, flotation, filtration and disinfection.
b) Aerobic biological treatment of wastewaters: principles of biological oxidation, suspended-biomass and fixed-film bioreactors.
c) Conventional activated sludge treatment, extended aeration, contact-stabilization: process description and design.
d) Trickling filters and rotating biological contactors: description and design.
e) Introduction to anaerobic biological treatment processes: types of reactors and applications.
f) Lab work: chemical coagulation/flocculation, flotation and biodegradability studies.
g) Technical visits to Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants
