Objectives

In the last years, in virtue of the requirements of the construction industry and the increasing of the concerns with the environment conducent to the construction sustenability, has been verified a remarkable development of new materials and also of new techniques. With this course is intended to present to the future civil engineers of FEUP the necessary knowledge to the use and the application of new materials in the civil construction, through the clear understanding of the behavior of the materials, of the form of the products, the techniques of application and the posterior functioning of the structures.
The main subjects in this course will be, concerning materials, the following ones: projecting considering the durability; echo-efficient additions as the ash of rind of rice - RHA; special concrete; polymeric hardened, hardened GRC, composites materials strengthened with staple fibres (GFRP, CFRP and AFRP); aluminium; characterization of the materials the short and long stated period. On the other hand, on the level of techniques, the following subjects are included: cofragem of Controlled Permeability - CPF; special techniques for hardened; techniques of reinforcement/rehabilitation of structures for addition of FRP systems; constructions with aluminum alloys; procedures of control and quality assurance.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The theoretical lessons are of verbal exposition of the subjects, on the board and with the projection of transparencies, of slides and films, for one better organization and illustration of the subjects. In the end of each subject they are formulated and decided some type-problem. The transparencies shown in the theoretical lessons and some documents of the bibliographical list are available for the pupils on the course web-page.
The subjects of in the theoretician-practical lessons, related with the subjects of the theoretical lessons, namely the “Improvement of Durability and Special Hardened” they will consist of practical works in the Laboratory of Assay of Materials and in the Laboratory of Durability. The theoretician-practical lessons referring to the subjects of Composites Materials and Aluminiums will include exercises of application of new criteria of project and construction of the materials, over all, in the flexion reinforcement, the cut and the increase of the compression and of ductility of structural elements. Promptly, they will be proposals of practical lessons in the Laboratory of Structures and the INEGI for evaluation of properties of the materials (according to present norms). Also they will be organized, for specialties, lectures, conferences and study visits of the workmanships where the new materials and the new techniques of construction are analysed.
