Objectives

The main objective of this subject consists in designing a short road, combining rural and urban environment, trying to follow the process of an actual project.
Besides the mains road, it includes intersections, roundabouts and parkings.
The students (working in groups of 2 or 3) have to deal with the special constraints inherent to new urban areas, industrial or commercial complexes, recreational areas and other particular environments that can not be satisfactorily covered by ex-JAE Design Guides and are not studied in precedent subjects.
This subject aims to the following points:
- combine horizontal and vertical elements of the road and study their reciprocal effects;
- apply and develop precedent knowledge about geometry, earthmoving and drainage;
- start the study of road safety and signalisation.

Program

This subject basically requires the knowledge acquired in "Vias de Comunicação 1 and 2", "Complementos de Estradas e Aeródromos", "Pavimentos 1 and 2" and "Circulação e Transportes 1 and 2".
Nevertheless, new skills are added in road safety and signalisation.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The students should work in groups of 2 or 3 elements, tutored by the docent team.
The most part of the time (of 6 hours per week) is for research and collection of relevant data by the students. After validation of the obtained data with the docent team and definition of the required main guidelines the actual design work is done.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Calculation formula of final grade

Global classification only.

Classification improvement

As the applicable rules of FEUP.
