Objectives
Aims: Integrated Laboratory in Biomedical Engineering I is a course unit, which aims to familiarise students with knowledge, methodologies and tools used in biomedical engineering.
This course unit will be focused on the scientific areas of the 1st semester of the 3rd year of the branch of Biomedical Engineering. However, it will integrate other areas in order to maximize interdisciplinarity.
Course units covered:
Human Physiology and Anatomy
Algorithms and Data Structure
Immunology and Infection
Radiation Physics in Medicine
Biological Systems Interface
Physiological Signal Processing
Program
Types of assignments
Thematic assignments (specific of the course units)
Experimental assignments
Themes of the experimental assignments
A- Clinical diagnosis and signal processing (including algorithms and data structure)
Supervisor: Aníbal Ferreira (in collaboration with Rui Camacho)
B- Cellular behaviour in bi and three dimensional structures
Supervisor: Mário Barbosa
C- Study and design of an electrical muscular stimulator
Supervisor: Diamantino Freitas
D- Biosensors
Supervisor: Carlos Fonseca (in collaboration with Diamantino Freitas)
Principles applied to experimental assignments:
a) Each student only carries out an experimental assignment;
b) One or two assignments in each area, depending on the number of students who chose a certain theme;
c) Students can carry out assignments in scientific areas of course units they do not attend;
d) Time to carry out an assignment: 70 h;
e) Theme choice: beginning of the semester;
f) Starting date: to be set by the supervisor;
Teaching methods and learning activities
Classes will be based on the development of the assignments by the students under supervision of the professors.
The assignments will be carried out at the following laboratories:
Biomedical engineering laboratories, which include:
1. Biology, Biosensors and Instrumentation laboratories (F202)
1.1 Cell culture room
1.2 Molecular Biology
1.3 Biosensors and Instrumentation
2. Biomaterials Laboratory (F301)
There are also other laboratories for specific assignments in areas which are not covered by Biomedical engineering laboratories.

Evaluation Type
Distributed evaluation without final exam
Eligibility for exams
Students have to attend classes and have to reach a minimum grade of 9.5 in the assignments.
Calculation formula of final grade
a) Thematic assignments on Radiation Physics in Medicine and Human Physiology and Medicine – the grades will be included in the final grade of the corresponding course units.
b) Thematic assignments on Physiological Signal Processing and Algorithms and Data Structure – the grade will be based on the number of hours spent carrying out the assignments.
c) Experimental assignments - the grade will be based on the number of hours spent carrying out the assignments.
Examinations or Special Assignments
