Objectives

Students should be able to:
Understand and explain the reliability issues of the composite generation-transmission system and cover the main evaluation techniques (CDIO 1.3, 1.4, 2.1, 2.3). Apply simulation methodologies to these problems (CDIO 2.1, 2.4, 2.5, 3.2, 3.3). Know and apply methodologies for planning, namely in an uncertainty environment (CDIO 2.5, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.6). Analyze the impact of the structural modifications of the electric sector in the planning activity (CDIO 2.5, 4.1, 4.2).

Program

Reliability of the generating system. Deterministic and probabilistic criteria for the evaluation of reserves. Reliability of the composite generation-transmission system. Analytic methods and simulation. Monte-Carlo method. Planning of transmission and distribution systems. Impact of the electric sector unbundling. Grid codes and corporate practices. Optimization based models. Commercial applications.
