Objectives

The course aims to develop students’ interest in and knowledge and understanding of tools and methods for system reliability at the substation and plant level and electricity generation methods. The module addresses in depth reliability models, risk analysis and compromise seeking among several planning objectives, namely investment, security, quality of service and generation and substation technology .
Learning Outcomes:
Students will develop knowledge and understanding of:
-undamental concepts, principles and mathematical theories used for decision in an environment contaminated with uncertainty
-methods to evaluate indices to study the goodness or acceptability of decisions
-undamental concepts and principles of risk analysis and system reliability
- power generation (hydro, thermal and renewable)
- substation design
They will acquire intellectual and practical skills to:
- develop appropriate models of scenario building and criteria representation for system planning
- evaluate decisions under the paradigm of risk analysis
- use multiple criteria concepts in evaluating solutions
- write a technical report based on performed studies

Reliability in Power Systems. Reliability in substations and switching stations. Minimal cuts and reliability indexes. Active and passive failures.Plant and station availability. Effect of failure mode. Simulation of failure modes. Evaluation of reliability indices. Numerical analysis of typical substations. Malfunction of alternative supplies. Evaluation of reliability worth.
Generation. Fossil-fueled steam generation. Nuclear fueled steam generation. Steam engines and turbines. Steam turbine applications.Hydroelectric Power Generation. Hydraulic turbines. Elements of a hydroelectric plant. Power plant settings.Reversible pump turbines.Renewable Energy. The Portuguese Power Generation System.
Substation design. Voltage levels. Bus types and connections. Physical arrangements. Support sructures. Clearances. Grounding. Fault analysis.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures, discussion and interaction about concepts and foundations of the methodologies. Tutorial classes dedicated to the development of small group projects that constitute the assignments of the course.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Eligibility for exams

Students have to attend to classes
Successful completion of the two assignments.

Calculation formula of final grade

Final Exam- FE- 14 values
Mark of the reports of the two practical assignments (PA)(3+3 values)
Students have to reach a minimum mark of 40% in each of the components.
