Objectives

To introduce the students to the topics of power system stability and control and power system circuit interruption and switching over-voltages

Program

Power System Stability. Basic Concepts. System Modelling and Dynamics of Synchronous Generator. Swing curve. Dynamics of a Synchronous Generator Connected to Infinite Bus. Equal area criterion for transient stability. Transient Stability Analysis. Numerical Integration (Types of Metods, Euler and Runge-Kutta Methods). Simulation for Transient Stability Evaluation. Excitation and prime mover controllers. Methods of improving power system stability. Application of Energy Functions for Direct Stability Evaluation.
Circuit interruption and switching over-voltages. Circuit breaker rating. Arc extinction and reignition. Balanced 3-phase fault at the circuit breaker terminals:-transient recovery voltage. First phase to clear. Resistance switching. Chopping magnetising current. Short line or kilometrc fault.
