Applied Modelling
Instance: 2006/2007 - 2S
Cycles of Study/Courses
Teaching language
Portuguese
Objectives
The subject core comprises two modules:
- Mineralurgical models
- Models of environmental dispersion
Both have as common objective the usage conceptual tools based on the principles of the conservation laws to model processes: artificial ones in the first case, and natural one, on the second case. All this systems have also as a common feature the fact that they to multiphasic systems with variables that are have either a scalar nature or a matricial one.
Program
MODULE I – Modeling applied to mineral processing
Crushing Models
Grinding Models
Systems with a continuous flux
Methods for estimating the steady-state in a closed circuit
Models for autogeneous grinding
Models for separations processes
Models of separation by flotation
Solid-Liquid Separation
MODULE II Models of Environmental Dispersion
Environmental compartments
Processes of transport and transformation: Diffusion, dispersion, advection, reaction, metabolism and elimination.
Partition of contaminants in the environment and multiphasic models
Contaminants in the superficial water
Transport and fate of contaminants in the subsoil
Models of atmospheric transport
Incorporation in the food chain.
Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical classes for the conceptual background
Application classes using generalist software in computer rooms
Eventual classes in the Geo-environmental laboratory.

Eligibility for exams
ATTENDANCE: The presence in practical classes is compulsory, excepting the situations expressly previewed in the general regulation It is reminded that the students with previous attendance are only excused from being present in practical classes if they have a schedule impossibility, which should be proved by the student.
The attendance requirement will not be attributed to the students which do not have a regular inscription and to those which did not attend more than 75% of the practical classes. Students without ATTENDANCE PRE-REQUIREMENT for any of the quoted reasons are excluded from final examinations.
Calculation formula of final grade
The student will be submitted to the following tests
MODULE III – SIMULATION – Practical examination with only one tentative, before the ending of the semester, in the last or before last week. The examination will be carried in a computer room and the students shall solve questions using appropriate control software. Weight in the final classification: 20%.
The remaining weight of 80% will be attributed according to the following possibilities:
Elective Alternative (Continuous Evaluation): The students will be submitted to two tests: one concerning Module I (Weight 50%) and another 2nd Module (30%). If the weighted classification in the three modules is equal or superior to 10 the students are immediately approved and they do not need to make the final examination.
For those students with attendance pre-requirement and which did not receive approval using the elective alternative, or did not elect it, and still for those who want to improve their classification, two examinations will be held on the subjects taught in modules I and II. No additional examination will be carried out concerning the 3rd Module.
Examinations or Special Assignments
The students must produce a work in each of the modules.
The students will also be subjected to a special test of knowledge evaluation.
