Objectives

The objective of this course is to review in depth the main concepts of Soil Mechanics, extending the topics already covered in the degree course.

Program

Phase relationships. Characteristics of identification of soils. Soil classification. Mineralogy of clays. Flocculation and dispersion. The structure of quick clays.
Stresses within a soil mass.
Effective stress concept. Geostatic stresses. Stresses induced by applied loads using elasticity theory.
Groundwater flow.
Darcy's law. Permeability. Laboratory tests. Field tests. Semi-empirical correlations. Equivalent permeability coefficient in a non-homogeneous soil. Two-dimensional fluid flow. Flow nets. Hydraulic instability. The effective stress principle in partially saturated soils. Capilarity.
Compressibility and consolidation of clays.
Stress-strain relations. Oedometer test. Calculation of consolidation settlements. Terzaghi consolidation theory. Secondary consolidation. Rowe cell consolidation. Limitations of Terzaghi theory. Theories of Terzaghi-Rendulic and Biot (main features). Two- and three-dimensional consolidation. The Mandel-Cryer effect.
Shear strength.
Stress-strain relations. Residual strength and progressive failure. Failure criteria. Shear tests. Shear strength in sands and clays (drained and undrained behaviour). Pore pressure parameters A and B. Stress paths. Short term and long term analyses. The hollow cylinder test.
