Chemistry Lab I
Instance: 2005/2006 - 1S
Cycles of Study/Courses
Teaching language

Objectives
The students must know safety rules in the lab and the basic procedures in analytical chemistry. They will be introduced to the statistical analysis of the experimental results. In the lab session students will learn basic procedures of the analytical chemistry, to interpret and discuss experimental results and to report them.
Program
Lab safety rules. Quantitative and qualitative analytical chemistry: lab procedures. Laboratory material and reagents for analytical chemistry: Classification of commercial chemicals, the analytical balance, volumetric glassware, other apparatus, obtaining the sample, operations of evaporation, decantation, filtration, drying and incineration. The laboratory notebook and reports. Data Handling: Significant figures, rounding off, accuracy and precision, tests of significance, rejection of a result, linear regression. Laboratory works: Determination of the molecular formula for inorganic compounds simple and hydrated; preparation of standard solutions, solutions standardisation, determination of the neutralization capacity of anti-acid pills, condutivity of solutions of ionic and covalent compounds.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical lectures: Oral exposition of the subjects supported by the blackboard and transparencies. Students are motivated to participate and to deduce the subjects. Laboratory works: Experimental works are performed. Notions of safety and laboratory good practices are emphasised. Methodologies used and interpretation of experimental results are discussed with the students.

Calculation formula of final grade
Theoretical component: NT = 0.5xMT1+0.5xMT2.
Laboratory work:NP= (0,2 x AC) + (0,2 x REL) + (0,6 x EL)
Final Grade of the discipline: NF = (0,5 x NT) + (0,5 x NP)
Where,
NF – Final Grade
MT1 and MT2 – short tests 1 and 2 respectively;
AC – Continuous evaluation (during the lab classes);
REL – report of one of the laboratory works;
EL- laboratory exam.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
- Students approved at the laboratory work of the subject since the scholar year 2000/2001 will be evaluated only at the theoretical component of the subject in the last exam.
Classification improvement
Students that pretend to improve their final grade, can only improve the theoretical grade in the last exam.
Observations
-The short tests are written tests without bibliographic support about theoretical subjects and experimental works, and should be performed within 50 min.
-The laboratory exams are laboratory procedures and results calculation with evaluation of the associated error.
-The students must be evaluated at all the components of the discipline.
