Objectives

To confer to the pupils theoretical and practical knowledge in the domain of the effluent water treatment and, including theoretical introductions of the processes of physical, chemical and biological treatment of the liquid and mud phases and accomplishment of individual exercises of calculation for sizing of the treatment agencies.

Program

Phase 1: Introduction of the main processes of water treatment, effluent and muds (2 weeks)
(1) Effluent and water characterization: quantification of the water consumption and effluent rejection , qualitative characteristic of the water and effluent
(2) The physical treatment: solid separation by riddling, decantation and filtration
(3) Chemical treatment: coagulation, flocculation, neutralization, oxidation
(4) Biological treatment: stream bed percolator, mud activated, nitrification, de-nitrification, aerobic digestion and anaerobic digestion
(5) Visit the ETA(Water Treatment Station) and ETAR (Station of Residual Water Treatment)

Phase 2: Hydraulical and sanitary sizing of the treatment agencies and selection of equipment (9 weeks)
(1) Selection of equipment for hydraulical sizing of the workmanship of entrance of ETA and ETAR
(2) Hydraulical sizing of gravitational decanter for ETA and ETAR
(3) Hydraulical and sanitary sizing of biological treatment tank made by muds activated treating residual waters
(4) Estimate of mud production originated by the effluent water treatment
(5) Hydraulical and sanitary sizing of the anaerobic digestor of muds with energy recovery

Teaching methods and learning activities

In the introductory phase of this course the students will be given some descriptive elements and a brief to have a fast ideia of the main processes of treatment universally applied in ETA and ETAR. There will also be visits to the ETAs and ETARs situated in the outskirts of Porto in order to allow the students to observe the physical aspect of the structures and the equipment and also to know the requirement and the problem of exploration. In the following phase, the pupils will carry through individual exercises in the lessons for sizing calculation of some agencies of treatment having used given different but identical processes of treatment. It foresees yourself to carry through 9 weekly exercises of sizing that include:
(1) Workmanship of ETAR entrance (1 week)
(2) Gravitational Decanter (1 week)
(3) Gravitational sand filter (1 week)
(4) Airing tank of activated muds with separation decanter and recirculation of muds (3 weeks) (5) Estimate of mud production (1 week)
(6) Anaerobic digestor of muds with energy recovery (2 weeks)
The sizing results will have to be concluded in the end of the stated period stipulated for each exercise or in the beginning of the next one.
There will be a final examination that serves partially for evaluation of the pupils. The content of the examination is divided in 2 parts: (1) theoretical part: principles of treatment, effectiveness of treatment and sizing techniques considerations (2) practical part: hydraulical and sanitary calculation, quantification of treatment income, selection of equipment

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam
