Water Supply Systems
Instance: 2006/2007 - 1S
Cycles of Study/Courses
Teaching language
Portuguese
Objectives
To deepen knowledge about design, construction and management of water supply systems.
OBS:
It is highly recommended that students interested in Water Supply Systems have a reasonable background on (i) design of water supply systems, including networks, pumping stations and tanks, (ii) computational programmes for water networks, e.g. EPANET or similar, (iii) waterhammer analysis."
Program
Study of waterhammer and its protection using the method of characteristics and computer calculation.
Distribution network: normal situations, fire, water quality, computer simulation. Main organs of the network. Construction methods and costs. Construction contracts.
Hydropneumatic systems.
Stability and tests of main pipes.
Water sources and their protection.
Water treatment.
Management of water supply systems. The efficient use of water.
Water legislation.
Technical visits.
Main Bibliography
Notes provided by the teacher.

Eligibility for exams
75% of the class hours, plus obligatory home-work.
IMP: Classes start around 12 September, therefore, it will be very difficult for the students to get conveniently involved if they come later than 20 September.
In fact, after 8 October no more absences will be permitted.
Calculation formula of final grade
The maximum mark is 20 points, distributed as follows:
- Obligatory work, 2 points
- Optional work, from 0 to 5
- Final exam, the remaining points.
Students must reach, at least, 9.5 points.
Examinations or Special Assignments
- Design of pipe protection against waterhammer using a computer programme.
- Water system simulation using a computer programme.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
General rules in the Faculty of Engineering.
Classification improvement
2nd exam in the specified period and/or additional home-work.
Observations
Knowledge about head-losses, water distribution systems and waterhammer is a highly recommended requisite.
