Objectives

This Unit aims at giving the students the necessary theory and practice for the design and operation of process control systems. This means:
Process control philosophies; Concepts about process control instrumentation; Concepts of theory and design feedback, feedforward and combined feedback-feedforward linear control systems; concepts of computer-aided process operation; ability for simulation of process operation; concepts of advanced and of multivariable control.

Program

1. Motivation and Methods; The process from a control perspective; Control philosophies; 2. Practical aspects of process control: instrumentation; 3. Process dynamics (review); 4. Feedback control: analysis of a control loop; 5. Closed-loop behaviour ; 6. Elements of system stability; 7. SISO feedback control design; 8. Complementary methods - a) cascade control; b) feed forward control. 9. Computer-aided process operation - a) structure of a digital control system; b) data acquisition and control by computer; c) applications of digital control; 10. Direct and inferential process monitoring; 11. Introduction to adaptive control. 13. Control engineering practice - aspects of plant control design and maintenance.
