Objectives

It is intended to familiarize students with processes, technologies and equipments that are close to the industrial reality, so that they can develop their own capabilities in what concerns execution, operation and critical analysis of systems within the scope of Chemical Engineering. The use of some software tools which are relevant in Chemical Engineering is also introduced, particularly CFD’s (Computational Fluid Dynamics).

Program

1. Laboratory works/projects
- PID feedback control;
- Treatment of liquid effluents by chemical oxidation with Fenton's reagent in a semi-continuous reactor;
- CO2 adsorption on an activated carbon packed bed;
- Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) for gas separation/purification.

2. Software projects
- Computational fluid dynamics (FLUENT).

It is expected that during the semester some of these projects might be replaced. In particular, the implementation of experimental works in the fields of polymers and/or combustion in fluidized bed is foreseen.

Main Bibliography

São fornecidos manuais relativos a cada trabalho, sendo para cada um indicada bibliografia complementar (livros, artigos, etc).

Teaching methods and learning activities

Each class is split in 2 sets (A and B), each one containing 5 groups of 3 students that will perform, along the semester, 5 practical works/projects. Reports are then required for 3 of the works, while for the other 2 a discussion meeting must be done with the responsible teacher.
There is another work that consists in describing an industrial implementation of one of the technologies studied in the above-mentioned experiments. Such work requires that students contact a company that has such technology. Then, oral presentations (ca. 15 min long) must be done, where students present the results of their research.

Description Type Time (hours) End date
Study for the experimental works and discussions. Estudo autónomo 30 2005-06-02
Total: 30,00

Eligibility for exams

Students must perform all the planned works/projects. Students with more than one unjustified absence will not obtain frequency.

Calculation formula of final grade

In-class evaluation = 15%
Written reports = 40%
Oral discussion of results = 20%
Oral presentation = 25%

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

The overall evaluation for students which are excused from frequency is replaced by an exam that consists on: i) pre-exam, to ensure that the candidate is able to safely perform the lab work, in which ca. 30 minutes of oral questions are done, also concerning the handling of the main equipments, ii) lab exam, where is required that students perform three practical works among those described in the course program (but in a shorter version, as required by the teacher), iii) discussion of the results for two of the performed works, and iv) extended/complete report for one of the performed works.
CLASSIFICATION = 0.3 x EL + 2 x 0.2 x DR + 0.3 x RC
A minimum classification of 10 is required in the lab exam (EL).

Classification improvement

Students that have attained frequency and wishing to improve their final classification must perform a lab exam (with practical and theoretical components) corresponding to one of the projects in the syllabus and write a full report on that work. The continuous evaluation classification (AC) will be maintained.
CLASSIFICATION = 0.45 x EL + 0.40 x RC + 0.15 x AC
A minimum classification of 10 is required in the lab exam (EL).

Observations

It must be stressed that the wastewater treatment unit through chemical oxidation with Fenton’s reagent and part of the PSA unit (O2 detector and zeolite) were lent by LEPAE – Laboratory of Process, Environmental and Energy Engineering.
