Objectives

Students should be able to identify particular aspects of mechanics of solid polymeric materials, namely viscoelastic behaviors, relating them with physical-chemical characteristics of the materials. They should also be able to interpret results from typical mechanical tests and explore its implications at an industrial level, in terms of product design and quality control

Program

0. Basic concepts on polymer structure and morphology.
1. Classification of rheologic behaviors in polymers. Viscoelasticity.
2. Mechanical analogs of viscoelastic behavior.
3. Experimental analysis of viscoleastic behavior.
4. Viscoelasticity regions.
5. Boltzmann superposition principle.
6. Relaxation time distribution.
7. Time-temperature equivalence.
8. Factor influencing viscoelastic behavior.
9. Stress-strain experiments. Ultimate properties and near-failure behavior.
10. Experimental techniques for measurement of mechanical properties.
11. Environental resistence.

Metódos de Ensino

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical ledtures combined with simple and expedite practical sessions.
One practical session is planned for the a material test laboratory in DEMM-FEUP.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Eligibility for exams

Less than 4 absences.

Calculation formula of final grade

0.15 x TC + 0.25 x P + 0.6 x T
em que:
TC: homework average;
P: project;
T: test.

Classification improvement

Final exam.
