Program
Soil contamination and its repercussion in different environmental compartments (i.e. groundwater, surface water). Definitions associated with this kind of environmental problem; legislation adopted in Portugal; contamination levels and related risks. Contaminated site approach methodology and site contamination assessment (direct and indirect survey and equipment for rapid identification of contamination types). Locating contamination sources, distribution of contaminants in the soil and their transport via different routes to potential receptors. Alternative strategies for the minimization of negative impact upon the receptors and application of remediation measures to contaminated sites. Reuse of waste; chemical, physical, hydraulic and mechanical characterization; engineering behaviour of isolated and mixed waste; its applicability in geotechnical works. Underground storage of natural products and underground stockage of industrial waste; examples; storage and stockage techniques and containment in cavities; importance of the host rock characteristics. Subsidence caused by natural factors and human activity; consequences; prevision and control.
