Objectives

Introduction to the problem of ground improvement. Detailed description of the most common ground improvement techniques and corresponding methods of analysis.

Program

Introduction to the methods of ground improvement; classification; design issues; control of execution. Densification of non-cohesive soils; compaction with explosives, dynamic compaction, vibrocompaction and pile driving. Pre-consolidation; preloading or surcharge loading; drainage path reduction; reduction of pore pressure; other techniques; design criteria. Thermal treatments; heating and freezing; examples of application. Chemical treatments; types of additives; factors affecting the treatment with cement and lime; mechanical properties of treated soils; examples of application. Lime columns. Grouting; applications; types of grout; permeability grouting, grouting with displacement and electrokinetic grouting; jet-grouting; grouting methods. Stone columns.
