Origin and evolution of Engineering Geology (EG). Importance of Geology in the applications to Engineering. Geology of Portugal: geological evolution of the territory, main constituent units; geological characteristics and specific geotechnical problems. The Geology in the anticipation of problems, in the treatment and interpretation of data and in the forecast of potential active phenomena. Description and classification of soils and rocks in EG. Natural construction materials. Geotechnical study of sites: objectives, methodology and study phases. Cartography and aerial photography. Geophysical prospecting. Mechanical prospecting. Tests for hydraulic and mechanical characterization. Interpretation of results and geotechnical ground zoning. Examples.
