Objectives
This course focuses its aims on the presentation and development of the following fundamental items:
- The concept of mineral and most importantly of crystal structure;
- Knowledge of the main criteria of mineral systematic and the main groups of minerals
- Development of summarized identification of the most common minerals on the crust
- Main rocks’ ore and minerals
- Recognition and understanding of the mineral transformations
- Presentation and discussion of simple thermodynamic models to explain spontaneous mineral transformations
- Use of such knowledge in constructing and reading phase balance diagrams

Teaching methods and learning activities
Further than the exposition of theoretical contents, this course tries to develop in the students observation abilities directed to identifying mineral samples. Thus, both theoretical and practical classes take place in classrooms with a wide variety of samples of rocks and minerals, as well as preparations of rocks for microscopic observation. If possible, there will be a field class to observe the natural conditions where there are minerals and where we can collect samples.

Eligibility for exams
To attain frequency, the students must attend 75% of practical classes. The course will have distributed evaluation without consultation and will be done with:
- Two theoretical mini-tests;
- Presentation of a monographic assignment on themes of the program;
- Reports on practical assignments.
The final classification will be calculated with the following formula:
(M+2T+R)/4
M – Monographic assignment; T – mean of the two mini-tests; R – mean of the reports on the practical assignments
The classification improvement done with the previous formula will be done with a final exam – theoretical and practical – whose grades will replace T and P on the calculation formula, being the monographic assignment and the reports’ grade kept.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
Special evaluation students will be evaluated with a final exam mentioned above. These students are dismissed from delivering the practical assignments’ reports but not from the monographic assignment.
Observations
Given that this is a continuous evaluation course, there is no re-sit exam.
