Objectives

Sensitization for the problems and specific interventions of the coastal zones as systems of very dynamic interface, opened and strong polarizing of occupations, uses and transformations. Initiation the order methodologies. Initiation to the conception, project, execution and comment of structures of coastal defense. Development of a work of research or small project on one of the considered subjects.

Program

Littoral. Coastal Zones. Coastal Environments and Ecosystems. Resources and Activities: residential, recreational, tourism, industrial, harbours, fishing, dredging. Conflicts.
Physical Processes: winds, waves, tides, currents. Coastal Morphodynamics: beaches, dunes, estuaries, lagoons, cliffs, sediment budgets, short-term / long-term evolution. Erosion.
Coastal Hazards. Vulnerability and Risk Assessment. Coastal Management. Coastal and River Management Plans. Coastal Protection and Coastal Defense Techniques: artificial nourishment, dune rehabilitation, groins, adherent works, detached breakwaters. Technical and Environmental Issues. Case Studies. GIS and Modeling Examples.


Teaching methods and learning activities

Presentation of the substances appealing to a great variety of national and international practical examples. Specific spreading of concepts and terminologies. The importance of the order of marginal fronts, the reduction of anthropic factors and the conception and project of the solutions of coastal defense. Videos. Study visits. Applications.
