Objectives
This course is designed to provide students with the basic skills required for successful computer use and to prepare them to readily work with office software tools: word processing, spreadsheets, presentation tools and database management.
Program
Introduction to computers and information technology. Types of computer and how they operate. Software and Hardware concepts. Computer components. Data representation and numbering systems. Introduction to Operating Systems: basic commands, file systems and process execution. Using Windows Operating Systems. Basic concepts of computer networks and the Internet.
Using office software tools, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation tools and database management. Word processors and electronic publishing tools. Document types. Word processing using Microsoft Word. Spreadsheets. Creating spreadsheets and graphics in Microsoft Excel. Ways of designing and creating slides, transparencies and computer presentations. Using Microsoft PowerPoint. Information systems and databases. Using Microsoft Access.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical classes shall comprise the formal explanation of subject-matter, with the use of transparencies, computer presentations and demonstrations with a video projector, followed by the presentation of examples and subsequent discussion. Practical classes include resolving exercises and preparing practical assignments.

Eligibility for exams
Tests: 70% (Two 1-hour tests comprising both a theoretical and a practical component)
Continuous assessment: 30% (including one practical assignment)
Students enrolled must comply with the legally foreseen absence limit and must achieve a minimum of 30% in every test in order to attain frequency.
Calculation formula of final grade
Final mark = (Test1+Test2)/2
Examinations or Special Assignments
There are no special tests or assignments. This course requires 30% of practical assessment for all students enrolled, resulting from the submission of practical assignments by the deadlines stipulated.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
For students enrolled under special regimes, the attendance of practical classes is not compulsory. Those students have the same opportunities for evaluation as any other student.
Classification improvement
Improvement may be attained in resit exam periods, according to the academic calendar of the Information Science Programme.
