Resumo (PT): Constituindo um dos acontecimentos mais traumáticos da História do século XX, a Grande Guerra encerra uma afectação global e revolve nevralgicamente todas as sociedades mobilizadas. No âmbito da História Cultural, com uma inevitável aproximação à História Política e Social, são aqui investigadas as políticas de memória da I Guerra Mundial em Portugal (1918-1933), num quadro de referência europeu. Reconhecendo a existência de uma cultura de guerra europeia, homogénea e hegemónica, procura-se perceber a natureza do mito da experiência de guerra em Portugal, numa análise que não pode deixar de considerar as profundas divergências em torno da sua participação no conflito em território europeu, assim como os desastrosos efeitos que determinaram a especificidade do seu processo rememorativo e que o relegaram ao possível estatuto de vencedor mutilado. Numa dialéctica entre memória oficial, pública e de grupo, pretende-se esmiuçar as políticas da memória através dos projectos oficiais de rememoração, pelo cruzamento dos seguintes eixos de análise: os combatentes como protagonistas, da sua integração social à regulamentação associativa; os processos de monumentalização da memória de guerra (formas, ritmos de implantação e rituais de reactualização do seu significado). Eixos que poderão esclarecer algumas questões. Em primeiro lugar, explicar até que ponto a incapacidade da I República em projectar uma consistente política memorial e a incapacidade em lidar com os traumas gerados pela guerra reflectiram a sua fragilidade, tendo precipitado a sua falência em 1926. Em segundo lugar, atendendo à delineação histórica dos espaços públicos de memória, identificar se existiu uma estruturação oficial da concepção memorial na base da legitimação histórica da política republicana. Por fim, a partir da natureza dos processos rememorativos, apreender se a apropriação da experiência da frente pela cultura de guerra alimentou e legitimou o discurso das transformações políticas de Portugal no pós-guerra. Neste sentido, este exercício visa desconstruir, por um lado, a ideia de que a génese dos regimes autoritários de direita acorreu exclusivamente na guerra e, por outro, a noção de que a guerra e a cultura de guerra inauguram uma ruptura de modernidade nas sociedades liberais.

Abstract (EN): Constituting one of the most traumatic events of the history of the Twentieth Century, the Great War ended a global affection and turned neurologically all mobilized societies. In this paper, the politics of memory of the First World War in Portugal are placed in a European context, both as part of the sphere of cultural history and of political and social history as well. Recognizing the existence of an European culture of war, both homogenous and hegemonic, it seeks to understand the nature of the myth of the war experience in Portugal in an analysis that considers the profound divergences within Portuguese participation in the conflict within Europe, such as the disastrous effects that determined the specific process of commemoration and those that relegated to the possible condition of a mutilated victor. In dialectic between official, public and group memory, it attempts to examine in detail the politics of memory through official projects of commemoration with respect to the following points of analysis: the veterans as protagonists, their social integration and associated regulation; the processes of monumentalization of war memory (forms, rhythms of enactment and rituals of reassessing their significance). These axes can clarify particular questions: first, they explain up to what point the the First Republic’s incapacity to project a consistent political memory and to deal with the traumas inflicted by the war reflects its fragility, precipitating its collapse in 1926; second, considering the historical definition of public spaces of memory, they can identify whether an official conception of commemoration actually existed in the base of the historical legitimization of republican politics; finally, considering the nature of commemorative processes, they can reveal whether the appropriation of the experience of the front for the war culture cultivated and legitimized the discourse of the political transformation after the war. In this sense, this exercise seems to deconstruct, on the one hand, the idea that the genesis of authoritarian regimes was a direct consequence of the war and, on the other, the notion that the war culture inaugurated a modernity rupture with liberal societies.
