Resumo (PT): As personagens femininas são, na literatura medieval, capazes de condicionar o rumo dos acontecimentos através do uso da palavra perante um auditório. Estas mulheres são não raras vezes personagens maternas. Neste artigo, apresentarei uma reconfiguração deste paradigma ao considerar um exemplo da épica do médio-alto-alemão, nomeadamente a matriarca Irmenschart, esboçada no Willehalm (c. 1210-1220) de Wolfram von Eschenbach. A intervenção da personagem materna na narrativa é marcada por uma astuta utilização da palavra na corte imperial em benefício do filho, por quem intercede e de cujo conflito se faz medianeira. Daqui resultará a reabilitação da virtude masculina dos membros da künne, a restauração da identidade da família e, finalmente, a oferta de auxílio material à causa de Willehalm. O caráter medianeiro e intercessor que marca a figuração de Irmenschart no texto será também perspetivado à luz de uma possível relação com o modelo cristão mariano da mater mediatrix.

Abstract (EN): In medieval literature, female characters can affect the course of events by speaking before an audience. These women are often maternal characters. In this article, I will analyze a reconfiguration of this paradigm by considering the example of the matriarch Irmenschart, depicted in Willehalm (c. 1210-20) by the Middle High German poet Wolfram von Eschenbach. An astute speech characterizes the intervention of the maternal character in the narrative in the imperial court for the benefit of her son, through whom she intercedes and whose conflict she mediates. This will rehabilitate the manly virtue of the members of the künne, restore her family’s identity and, finally, ensure material assistance to Willehalm’s cause. The mediator and intercessor nature that commands Irmenschart’s role in the plot will also be perceived in the light of a possible connection to the Christian and Marian model of the mater mediatrix.
