Resumo (PT): We perform an interpretation of an early 1960’s work by Eduardo Anahory located in Serra da Arrábida where, by using a pre-fabrication technique, wood construction entails a structural and expressive function. In the end of the 1950’s, as Portuguese architecture questioned the functionalist underpinnings of the Modern Movement while not completely abandoning them thus demonstrating a certain “maturity”, a “moment of variation” appeared. This period, characterized by a search of local references relative to each place, in the form of interpreting a context in which resides the basis of location options, and the relation of the work with the place, is associated to an important array of buildings that brings back an expressive use of wood, mainly on the interior. While Portuguese architecture sought to reflect other parameters, Eduardo Anahory attempted to explore themes, namely about material use, costs and construction methods. At a time when Portugal was well established in concrete-building technology and Portuguese architectonic production reached maturity, the “Galapos vacation house” worked as an example of a path/experiment that had its base on the pre-fabricated elements in construction in Portugal. In this work, the use of wood follows the construction of the structural elements and coverings, an example that was not followed or expanded in contemporaneous or later architectonic production.
