Resumo (PT): Espaço emblemático, a Região Demarcada do Douro (RDD) é não só um cenário privilegiado onde se produzem vinhos excelentes, designadamente o Vinho do Porto, mas também um conjunto paisagístico que reflete um valioso historial. Ao longo dos seus 250000 hectares de extensão, multiplicam-se os socalcos repletos de vinhedos, realçando-se uma paisagem classificada, em 2001, como Património Mundial da Humanidade. Estamos, de facto, perante um cenário cativante, mas também um património arquitetónico, sócio-cultural, gastronómico e enológico soberbos que, no entanto, urge dinamizar. Todavia, os obstáculos ao seu desenvolvimento multiplicam-se, tendo sido ainda agravados durante a crise iniciada em 2008. Assim se destacam problemas não só de âmbito demográfico, mas também os de cariz económico, particularmente os associados à vinha e ao turismo. Como dominam na região as pequenas explorações de estrutura familiar, sobretudo no ¿Baixo Corgo¿, a subregião mais ocidental, tendo por base um amplo trabalho de campo que incluiu a realização de inquéritos e entrevistas aos principais interventores na definição de estratégias e dinâmicas territoriais durienses como os agentes políticos e técnicos setoriais, ou os responsáveis pelas explorações vitícolas e turísticas, e, obviamente, os residentes, os principais preservadores deste património distinguido pela UNESCO, conseguimos caracterizar sinteticamente o cenário regional, realçando a vertente turística em espaço rural e os seus problemas, sobretudo na sequência da crise que se instalou. Numa conjuntura em que cada vez mais se realça o turismo como despoletador/revitalizador do desenvolvimento regional, que estratégias foram adotadas no sentido de assegurar a preservação e a competitividade duriense e num quadro sustentável? Recorrendo a casos paradigmáticos, fica patente que, de facto, a região tem potencialidades múltiplas que lhe permitem subsistir e dinamizar-se, inclusivamente em períodos de crise económica.

Abstract (EN): An emblematic area, the Douro Demarcated Region (DDR) not only offers a privileged setting where excellent wines are produced, namely Port wine, but also a landscape that reflects its historical wealth. Throughout its 250000 hectares of land, terraces are laden with vineyards, framing a landscape classified in 2001 as a World Heritage Site. It is indeed a captivating scenario, home to superb architectural, socio-cultural, gastronomic and oenological heritage that, nevertheless, needs to be protected and bolstered. However, the obstacles to its development have multiplied and have been further aggravated during the crisis which began in 2008. The problems the region faces are not only demographic but also economic, particularly those associated with winegrowing and tourism. Small family-based farms dominate the region, especially in the ¿Baixo Corgo¿, the westernmost sub-region. This article characterises this regional scenario, emphasising the rural landscape and its problems, especially in the aftermath of the crisis. The study is based on extensive fieldwork that included surveys and interviews with key stakeholders in the definition of territorial strategies and dynamics in the Douro, such as sectoral political and technical agents, as well as vineyard and tourism managers and, of course, the residents, the main custodians of this heritage distinguished by UNESCO. In a context in which tourism is increasingly emphasised as a catalyst for revitalising regional development, what strategies have been adopted to ensure the conservation and competitiveness of the region, ensuring furthermore its sustainability? Using paradigmatic cases, it is clear that, in fact, the region has multiple potentialities that allow it to subsist and flourish, even in times of economic crisis.
